De tanto andar, una madre de un niño
Walking so much, the mother of a child
De poca edad, de baja estatura
A young child, of small stature
De pelo rizado, de un cuerpo adorable
With curly hair, with an adorable body
Yo conocí
I met her
Una hermosa mujer que me hizo sentir
A beautiful woman who made me feel
Que aún había tiempo, que solo era el comienzo
That there was still time, that it was only the beginning
Que todo lo vivido era solo el reflejo
That everything I had lived was only the reflection
De lo que pasaría cuando la conocí
Of what would happen when I met her
Esa mujer de la que hoy le hablo
That woman I speak of today
Con el pecho desecho, esa mujer
With a broken heart, that woman
Mi cuarto, mi carro, mi cama y mi radio
My room, my car, my bed and my radio
Oh, lleno de recuerdos, todo ella lo dejó
Oh, full of memories, she left it all
Y hoy se ha marchado dejando una duda
And today she has gone, leaving a doubt
No sé si me quiso, si me traicionó
I don't know if she loved me, if she betrayed me
Como me contó el que presenció
As told to me by the one who witnessed
Que otro llegó de un pueblo lejano buscándola a ella
That another man came from a faraway town looking for her
Pero así pasó
But that's how it went
Pero a esa mujer (La borraré)
But that woman (I'll erase her)
A esa mujer (La borraré)
That woman (I'll erase her)
A esa mujer (La borraré)
That woman (I'll erase her)
La borraré (La borraré)
I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
A esa mujer (La borraré)
That woman (I'll erase her)
La borraré (La borraré)
I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
A esa mujer (La borraré)
That woman (I'll erase her)
La borraré (La borraré)
I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
No sé con qué
I don't know with what
Si con gasolina
Maybe with gasoline
O papel de lija
Or sandpaper
O tine o gasoil
Or dye or diesel
Pero a esa mujer yo la borraré (La borraré)
But that woman, I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
A esa mujer (La borraré)
That woman (I'll erase her)
La borraré (La borraré)
I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
A esa mujer (La borraré)
That woman (I'll erase her)
La borraré
I'll erase her
De noche tengo insomnio, no puedo dormir
At night I have insomnia, I can't sleep
Yo siento su voz, su cuerpo caliente
I feel her voice, her warm body
Su voz que me dice: "papi, ven pa'cá
Her voice saying to me: "daddy, come here
Papi, echa pa'cá; papi, venga a bañarte"
Daddy, come this way; daddy, come take a bath"
Pero a esa mujer yo la borraré (La borraré)
But that woman, I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
A esa mujer (La borraré)
That woman (I'll erase her)
La borraré (La borraré)
I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
A esa mujer (La borraré)
That woman (I'll erase her)
La borraré (La borraré)
I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
A esa mujer (La borraré)
That woman (I'll erase her)
La borraré, la borraré (La borraré)
I'll erase her, I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
La borraré (La borraré)
I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
La borraré (La borraré)
I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
De noche tengo insomnio, no puedo dormir
At night I have insomnia, I can't sleep
Yo siento su voz, su cuerpo caliente
I feel her voice, her warm body
Su voz que me dice: "papi, ven pa'cá
Her voice saying to me: "daddy, come here
Papi, venga a comer; papi, venga a bañarte"
Daddy, come eat; daddy, come take a bath"
Pero a esa mujer yo la borraré, la borraré (La borraré)
But that woman, I'll erase her, I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
A esa mujer (La borraré)
That woman (I'll erase her)
La borraré (La borraré)
I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
De mi pensamiento (La borraré)
From my thoughts (I'll erase her)
De mi vida (La borraré)
From my life (I'll erase her)
De mi cuerpo (La borraré)
From my body (I'll erase her)
De mi mente (La borraré)
From my mind (I'll erase her)
De mi amor (La borraré)
From my love (I'll erase her)
De mi existencia (La borraré)
From my existence (I'll erase her)
A esa mujer (La borraré)
That woman (I'll erase her)
Yo la borraré (La borraré)
I'll erase her (I'll erase her)
La borraré, la borraré
I'll erase her, I'll erase her
La borraré, la borraré
I'll erase her, I'll erase her
La borraré, la borraré
I'll erase her, I'll erase her
La borraré, la borraré
I'll erase her, I'll erase her
La borraré, la borraré
I'll erase her, I'll erase her
La borraré, la borraré
I'll erase her, I'll erase her
La borraré, ay, mamá (La borraré)
I'll erase her, oh, mama (I'll erase her)
La borraré, la borraré
I'll erase her, I'll erase her
La borraré, la borraré
I'll erase her, I'll erase her
La borraré, tírame la toalla (La borraré)
I'll erase her, throw me the towel (I'll erase her)
La toalla (La borraré)
The towel (I'll erase her)
La toalla
The towel
Échenme fre'co
Cool me down
Séquenme el sudor
Wipe off my sweat

🌍 Culture & Context

Context

Released in 1990 on the album 'El Tomate', 'Esa Mujer' is one of Luis Vargas's most iconic tracks and a true classic of traditional Dominican bachata. The song has endured through the decades and remains a staple at bachata nights worldwide, frequently cited among the genre's standards alongside Anthony Santos and Juan Luis Guerra.

Meaning

The song tells the pain of a man abandoned by the woman he loved, who left with someone from a distant town. The narrator tries to 'erase' ('borrar') the memory of her, while confessing his insomnia and being haunted by her voice. The bittersweet humor of the outro — asking for a towel, wiping off the sweat — is typical of Luis Vargas's expressive, folk-rooted style.

Artist

Luis Vargas (born May 23, 1961, in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic) is one of the pioneers of modern bachata. He revolutionized the genre by introducing guitar effect pedals (notably the chorus pedal) and humbucker pickups, profoundly transforming bachata's sound. In 1996, he became the first bachata artist to sign with Sony Music Latin. In the early 1990s, Anthony Santos played güira in his band before launching his own career.
